Zakat Rules

Zakat Rules in the UK

Zakat is due on zakatable assets that reach nisab and have been held for a lunar year (hawl), at 2.5%.

Common Zakatable Assets

These are the assets most UK households include when calculating wealth Zakat.

  • Gold and silver (including jewellery, even if worn)
  • Cash and bank savings
  • Trade stock and business inventory held for sale
  • Money owed to you that you expect to receive

Nisab

Nisab is the minimum threshold. Gold nisab is 7.5 tola (87.48 g). Silver nisab is 52.5 tola (612.36 g).

Our calculator uses live metal prices when available so the GBP threshold stays current.

If you hold only gold, gold nisab is used. Cash, silver, stock or mixed wealth usually uses silver nisab. Confirm with a scholar if unsure.

Common Questions

Do I include my home and car?

No. The home you live in, your personal car, furniture and everyday clothes are not zakatable.

What about debts?

Debts due now are usually deducted. A full remaining mortgage is not subtracted in one go — only instalments due.

Is Fitrana the same as Zakat?

No. Sadaqat al-Fitr (Fitrana) is separate and is given before Eid prayer. Wealth Zakat is calculated on assets.
