Sadaqah
Why Sadaqah matters: small acts that add up
By Nagina Social Welfare UK · 3 min read

Sadaqah is the charity we give out of love for Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta'ala), not because a fixed amount is due. Unlike Zakat, it has no minimum and no yearly date. A coin placed in a collection box, an hour spent helping a neighbour, a lesson taught to a child: each of these can be sadaqah. This article looks at what Sadaqah is, why it matters, and how to make it a steady part of life.
Sadaqah and Zakat: what is the difference?
Zakat is obligatory. It is 2.5% of eligible wealth that has reached the nisab and been held for a lunar year, and it is given to specific categories of people. Sadaqah is voluntary. You choose the amount, the timing and the cause. Many Muslims give both: Zakat to fulfil a duty, and Sadaqah to go beyond it.
What the Holy Qur'an and the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ teach
The Holy Qur'an compares spending in the way of Allah to a grain that grows seven ears, each carrying a hundred grains (Surah al-Baqarah, 2:261). The image is simple: what is given sincerely is multiplied far beyond what it looks like when it leaves your hand.
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught that charity does not reduce wealth, and that even a smile to your brother is charity. These reports show that Sadaqah is not only about large sums; kindness in any form counts.
Small and regular beats large and rare
It is easy to wait until we can give something big. A better habit is to give a little, often:
- set aside a small amount each week, for example every Friday;
- give a little extra in Ramadan and on special days;
- let children put coins in the charity box themselves, so they learn the habit young;
- keep a regular amount that you will still be able to give in a difficult month.
Ways to give Sadaqah that are not only money
Sadaqah can be time and skill as well:
- teaching someone to read the Qur'an or a simple dua;
- helping an elderly neighbour with shopping or paperwork;
- volunteering at a community event or class;
- offering a lift, a meal or a listening ear to someone struggling.
Giving that keeps giving
Respected scholars often speak of sadaqah jariyah, ongoing charity: a gift whose benefit continues, such as supporting education, a well, or a place of learning. Many people choose to support children's Islamic education for this reason, because what a child learns can stay with them and be passed on. If you are unsure how a particular gift should be understood, a qualified scholar (alim) can kindly advise you.
Giving with sincerity
Sadaqah is accepted by the intention behind it. Give for the sake of Allah alone, give from what is good and lawful, and avoid reminding the person of your gift or giving to be seen. A gift given quietly, with a sincere heart, is better than a large one given for show.
